Garden Struggles

So I've been trying my hand at vegetable gardening, and it's much more difficult than I thought it would be.

There's more to think about than I originally realized. Seeds or transplant? Sun versus shade? Lots of water, or just a bit? Luckily the Internet is a wonderful thing.

From there, I had to tackle the local wildlife scene and figure out how  to outsmart the family of woodchucks in the backyard.

To do this, I cleverly planted my crops in the front yard, not out back where they live. No sense making it easy for them to eat my food.

I also planted a lot of root vegetables (carrots, beets, onions, squash, along with the obligatory tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs), figuring it would be harder for my furry pals to get at them.

Those woodchucks are going to have to get up pretty early in the morning to fool this farmer.

One thing I didn't count on though is bugs and birds. Bugs are eating my leaves and birds are eating my seeds (I think). I plan to address this little problem later this morning. Stupid bugs.

If all goes well, I'd like to build a greenhouse or some other type of enclosure and try growing as much of my own food as possible, without having to contend with the varmints.

With a little luck I'll be inviting people over for a root vegetable stew sometime in late-August or early September.

Stay tuned!

  1. This is the silly Dave Wheeler that has me giggling out loud. The farmer-you are so foolish.
